1940s: Pin-up Perfect
During and after World War I, military styles made their way into women's fashion. Shoulder pads made for broad, boxy shoulders and even bras began to have a pointy, missile-like shape. Women during this time were expected to have small waists achieved by using shapewear along with long limbs and a taller stature which reflected the more commanding look women were expected to have at the time. Celebrity Betty Grable was called "The Woman with Million Dollar Legs."
